Magi Merlin releases BOOTY live session ahead of a series of dates

Magi Merlin presents a glimpse into her creative process with a captivating live session for BOOTY, the second song from her latest EP A Weird Little Dog. Shot, directed and edited by Vladim Vilain, the video shows Magi on vocals and long-time collaborator Funkywhat on bass while showcasing their extensive use of effects pedals.

BOOTY is my way of speaking up about our current world systems, explains the Montreal-based artist. It's a rally and a call to action. We are powerful, even when the system tries to convince us otherwise. If we created this world, why can't we reimagine it, why can’t we rewrite the rules? Let us aspire to power, not for ourselves but for everyone around us.

Magi Merlin describes the session as a labour of love: Funkywhat and I were able to play music that we are so proud of in the most beautiful of spaces, captured in the most beautiful way. If ever I needed a reminder of what is important, I can turn to this session as it is the physical manifestation of community and it is very dear to me. It was filmed at the loft of multidisciplinary artist Fanny-Jane, who is also responsible for the set decorations and Magi’s dress and rings. She had just finished painting the floors of her loft blue before we were getting ready to shoot, adds Magi.

After opening for contemporary jazz musician Nubya Garcia on her North American tour in April, Magi Merlin is now set to perform at both the Ottawa Jazz Festival and the Montreal Jazz Festival in the next few weeks, among others. About A Weird Little Dog

Magi Merlin leans deeper than ever into her artistic integrity on A Weird Little Dog, the long-awaited follow-up to 2022’s Gone Girl. Born from a mixed perspective of anger, anxiety and hope towards the current social, political and environmental state of the world, this surprise 4-track EP sees Magi delving in her eclectic set of influences to craft an uncompromisingly unique sound she likes to call broken R&B. Glitch pop, neo-soul, indietronica, hip hop and alternative R&B collide with various strains of late-90’s electronic music to form the psychedelic template from which these new songs were born. A Weird Little Dog also marks Magi Merlin’s debut as a producer, working alongside her long-time collaborator Funkywhat.

About Magi Merlin

Magi Merlin (pronounced MADGE-eye) grew up in Saint-Lazare, Canada. A place that may sound unfamiliar to you, but it is a lot closer to home than you realize. A suburb like all others. The epitome of normalcy. Unless, of course, you replace white with black; straight with queer, then normalcy is challenged. This, amongst other subjects – such as the impact of capitalism on art, nepotism, and the relationship one has to taking pleasure in belonging to those things while rejecting them all — is what fuels Magi Merlin's creative universe.

It would not be entirely accurate to refer to her as only a singer or a songwriter. Music is indeed at the core of her artistry, but her world expands beyond the medium. It is one that is equally visual as it is auditory, one that is continuously shaped through collaborations with producers such as Funkywhat, designers, photographers, video directors and even film directors. With A Weird Little Dog and Bip / 9volt, a stand-alone double single released in November 2024, Magi Merlin provides a glimpse of what's to come in the next year or so.
